Sam was born in 1970 at Beckley WV. He is the only son of Samuel and Nancy Cale, who are both retired United Methodist ministers. Sam has lived in many parts of West Virginia, including Fayetteville, Oak Hill, Gauley Bridge, Charleston, Tunnelton, Meadowbridge, Mason, Bridgeport and now Lumberport. Sam is a 1989 graduate of Gauley Bridge High School, and a 1993 graduate of West Virginia Tech, where he earned a Bachelors Degree in business management. Sam graduated in December 1999 from United Theological Seminary with a Masters in Divinity.

Sam's wife, Debra is a science teacher. His son Samuel is in college studying Mechanical Engineering.

Sam has been in ministry in the United Methodist Church since 1992. He was ordained an Elder in 2004.

From an early age, Sam has been involved in karate. He has earned many awards and honors in the sport, including several National Champion titles.

Sam studies and participates in armored medieval combat and armor reproduction. He also enjoys metalwork, woodworking, tooling leather, and reading historical fiction.
